The Documentation Centre is located on the ground floor of the offices of the CVSS/United Way at Coronation Building, 122-126 Tower Street, Kingston.

CVSS is a national, non-profit umbrella organization for nearly 90 agencies. Its main purpose is to ensure the development of the voluntary sector in Jamaica. It supports services that address a wide range of programmes including support to persons with disabilities, abused and elderly individuals; child-care and protection; HIV/AIDS; skills training and employment generation for youths at risk.

Currently, CVSS is implementing an Institutional Strengthening Project that is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank. This project seeks to enable participating non-governmental organizations (NGO) to operate more efficiently and effectively. Through this assistance it is hoped that NGOs will achieve national goals of poverty reduction and sustainable development.

The development of the Documentation Centre is one component of this project.  Work began in January 2004  with the task of providing NGOs access to better services through the enhancement of a resource centre providing greater network opportunities.

This will be achieved through the following:

  • Development of a website which meets the requirements of Universal Design. Universal Design calls for the development of information systems flexible enough to accommodate the needs of the broadest range of users of computers and telecommunications equipment, regardless of age or disability.  Links to other NGOs will be included.

  • Production of a Jamaican NGO database  with online access via the website. This will provide opportunities for research and reference on the NGO sector. A hardcopy of this database will also be produced.

  • Acquisition of local publications from the NGO sector so that a local clearinghouse of NGO information is developed. Information on the non-governmental sector would then be available for all Jamaicans and the wider local and international community.

Presently the collection comprises some newsletters, annual reports and reports from the local NGO community pamphlets covering a wide variety of subjects as well as texts used for the training programmes undertaken by CVSS, particularly the Certificate in the Management of NGOs offered in collaboration with the School of Continuing Studies, UWI.

  • Development of an electronic catalog. Eventually this will be an online catalog accessed through the CVSS website.

  • Development of a newspaper clippings file as an electronic database.

  • There will also be an electronic photographic database showing the work and history of CVSS.

 Current services are:

  • Information support and computer access for the CVSS’ training programmes

  • Scanning

  • Photocopying in black and white and colour

  • Laminating and Binding
